Layers of Memory

The theme of TCS 2026 was “FUTURE VINTAGE — carrying the memory of the past into the future”. To the image of memory layered upon a city, UZETSU answered with layers of Echizen washi.

Washi is itself a “layer” — thin fibres laid one over another. Costumes were made from it, danced on a water basin, and finally dissolved, the costumes disappearing into the water. Memory, however deeply layered, will one day shift and return — the Buddhist sense of impermanence, given form in a single, unrepeatable performance. The title “Layers of Memory” is a response to those layers.
